Despite the end of the Eid-al-Adha holidays, the People’s Majlis did not conduct a sitting on Monday.
After going on a two-week recess last May, parliament reopened and held a sitting last Monday. However, no additional sittings have been held since then.
According to Majlis regulations, sittings should be held three days a week. They are usually held on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. However, no sittings were held on Tuesday and Wednesday last week either.
After the Eid al-Adha holidays, no Majlis sitting was held on Monday, and no committee meetings have been scheduled either.
After returning from the long recess and holding the first sitting of the term last Monday, the following Tuesday's sitting was cancelled without a specific reason. On the same day, a meeting of the Human Rights and Gender Committee was scheduled for 11am. However, that committee meeting was also cancelled.
Previously, lawmakers belonging to the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had expressed concern about parliament sittings being cancelled without reason.
However, the Majlis leadership had then stated that sittings were being cancelled due to a lack of work to be done in the chamber, but committee work would continue. Speaker of the Majlis Abdul Raheem Abdulla had said at the time that although some sittings of the previous term were cancelled, committee work was ongoing.
