President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has forwarded the names of High Court Judge Mohamed Saleem and former High Court Judge Abdulla Hameed to the People's Majlis seeking approval for their appointment as Supreme Court Justices.
In Monday's parliamentary sitting, the names of these two individuals were forwarded to the Judiciary Committee for review.
Parliament went on recess on 14 May 2025, after the main ruling People’s National Congress (PNC)’s supermajority removed two Supreme Court Justices, Dr. Azmiralda Zahir and Mahaz Ali Zahir. The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) announced vacancies for Supreme Court Justice positions on 17 May 2025.
By the application deadline, 12 individuals had applied for the Supreme Court Justice positions. High Court Judge Mohamed Saleem and former High Court Judge Abdulla Hameed received the highest scores.
Former High Court Judge Abdulla Hameed was dismissed from his position as a High Court Judge on 6 June 2022, following an investigation by the JSC into the acceptance of flats given to judges by former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration.
At the time, JSC investigated the matter, decided on his dismissal, and sent it to the People's Majlis.
Judge Mohamed Saleem has extensive experience in the legal field. He took the oath as a High Court Judge on 9 August 2022.
