Electricity has been restored to the Greater Malé Region after more than five hours of power outage.

The power outage in the Greater Malé Region occurred around 12:30pm on Sunday. After several hours, the electricity was restored around 05:50pm.

When the power outage occurred in the Greater Malé Region, the State Electric Company (STELCO) initially revealed that it was due to a technical issue affecting Malé City and Hulhumalé. However, STELCO did not specify what the exact issue in question was.

Later, STELCO revealed that they were completing necessary checkups before re-energizing the GMR grid. They also mentioned that they would proceed with restoring power service as soon as these checkups were completed.

Subsequently, STELCO started some generators in Malé and Hulhumalé and began providing electricity to critical locations. As such, power was restored to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and Dharumavantha Hospital.

Afterwards, STELCO began restoring power to large areas of Malé and Hulhumalé. After resolving the issue, electricity was restored to the entire GMR.

Sharing information with journalists about the power outage, STELCO stated that the outage was not due to a problem with their generators or transformers.

STELCO further stated that after resolving the issue and restoring power, such a widespread power outage across the entire Malé region is a rare occurrence.

When the power outage occurred in the Greater Malé Region on Sunday, it caused significant inconvenience to the general public. Many businesses were forced to close. Further, many schools in the Malé region were also closed.

With the power outage in Malé, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had also instructed relevant authorities to investigate this as a serious matter. Later, the Maldives Police Service (MPS) announced that they had initiated an investigation into the power outage incident in the Greater Malé Region.
