President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the 'Attorney General's Office Bill'.
The bill was passed by the People's Majlis during a sitting held on May 15.
Although the Attorney General's Law was ratified on Thursday, it will come into effect 90 days from ratification date. The bill was passed at the 32nd sitting of the first session of the People's Majlis for the year 2025, held on May 15. With this, the Attorney General's Office Law has come into existence.
The Attorney General's Office Law establishes the administrative framework for state lawyers and employees of the Attorney General's Office who assist in fulfilling the responsibilities and duties entrusted to the Attorney General under Article 133 of the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives. As some changes have been decided to be made to the administrative system of the Attorney General's Office that will be established when this law comes into effect, it has been decided to formulate relevant amendments and submit them at the beginning of the second session of the People's Majlis scheduled to start during June.
Accordingly, some of the amendments decided to be made to the aforementioned law include changes to the principles stated in the law regarding the composition of the Attorney General's Office, some proposed amendments to change certain matters designated as responsibilities of the office, in addition to arranging for the President's Office to have a role in formulating the staff structure of the Attorney General's Office, and to ensure that the salaries, benefits, and retirement policies for the staff of the Attorney General's Office are determined in accordance with government policies and the principles set by the National Pay Commission.
