President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the Maldives Police Service (MPS) is investigating the case properly

Dr. Mohamed Munavvar, the head of the Special Presidential Commission established to investigate the incident that was reported in the capital Malé City on April 18, has stated that he is unsure of the purpose behind President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s decision to establish the commission.

Munavvar made this statement in response to a question by a journalist from RaajjeTV during a press conference held on Wednesday to provide information from the special commission established by the president to investigate the case of 21-year-old Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed falling onto the roof of H. Mithaaz from H. Fentenoy on April 18.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the Maldives Police Service (MPS) is investigating the case “properly”. However, there are significant concerns from both the public and Yumnu's family regarding how the police are conducting the investigation. In addition to this, many people have been expressing concerns and raising questions about some of the information provided by the police institution in connection with the case while the investigation is ongoing.

As a result, young people and Yumnu's family have been expressing their concerns and even holding protests, claiming that there are several lies and deceptions in the police investigation.

When asked if he believed that the special commission established by President Muizzu was established due to the numerous deceptions in the police investigation of Yumnu's case, Munavvar replied that he couldn't say what the president's purpose was in establishing the commission, and therefore he couldn't comment on what he believed about it.

He said that all he knows is that Muizzu has established a commission and assigned its work to them. Munavvar also stated that the president has appointed a commission president to ensure work be carried out adequately.

Munavvar added that all he knows is that there is a decree, a mandate, and a law visible. Beyond that, he said he doesn't know anything else.

Given the current situation, Munavvar stated that he has no understanding whatsoever of what thoughts, purposes, whose negligence, or what failures led the president to establish a special presidential commission.

While the president has established a commission to investigate Yumnu’s case, the police institution is also conducting an investigation into the matter. The police institution initially revealed that Yumnu “fell on her own”. However, several young adults have initiated a series of protests in the capital city, claiming that trust in the police investigation has been lost.

In these protests, they have been calling for the resignation of Ali Shujau, who was in the position of Commissioner of Police, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan, and Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen. Among these, CP Ali Shujau has already resigned and the two ministers continue to assert that there is “no reason” for them to resign.
