President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has concluded his official visit to Malaysia.

The Maldivian leader returned to Malé City after concluding his official visit to Malaysia, on Wednesday.

The president’s official visit came upon the invitation of the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim. Upon the president's arrival in Malaysia, he was officially welcomed in Putrajaya on April 28.

During the visit, the Maldivian president addressed the Maldives-Malaysia Business Forum 2025, which invited Malaysian businesses to take advantage of the new business opportunities in the Maldives and to participate in the president's vision of making the Maldives a stronger, business-friendly, and future-ready nation.

As part of his visit to Malaysia, the Maldivian leader also met with Maldivians residing in the country and inquired about their well-being.

At the meeting, he announced that to facilitate matters for Maldivian students, starting from 2026, the government budget will allocate USD 3,000 worth of Malaysian Ringgits annually to the "Maldivian Students Association" in Malaysia. At the event, he officially launched the Maldivian ID card service and the Maldivian electronic passport service in service in Malaysia. He also inaugurated the "Maldivian Students Association."

According to the President's Office, the trip was “very successful”.

The visit included the conferment of an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree in "Islamic Leadership and Civil Development" to Muizzu by the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). After accepting this honorary doctorate, Muizzu delivered a speech on the topic "Intellectual Renaissance: Unveiling the Scientific and Modern Development of Islamic Civilization."

However, former students of the International Islamic University Malaysia in the Maldives expressed concern and sent a letter to IIUM opposing the university's decision to award an honorary doctorate to President Muizzu. This letter was signed by 225 students.

Although the President's Office stated that he met with several Maldivians living in Malaysia, many students pursuing education in Malaysia reportedly boycotted the meeting. It has been reported that while some students participated in the meeting, the number was relatively small.
