President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has accepted the resignation of Ali Shujau, who held the position of Commissioner of Police.

This was revealed by Chief Spokesperson at the President’s Office, Heena Waleed in a post on social media platform ‘X’ on Saturday.

Shujau decided to resign from his position some time on Saturday.

Before tendering his resignation, Shujau informed senior police officials as well as the president.

Information has also been received that a police board meeting was held prior to Shujau's resignation.

At the time of Shujau's resignation, both the police and Shujau himself had been facing criticism regarding the case of a young woman who fell onto the roof of a house in capital Malé City.

Calls for Shujau's resignation have also been made during the ongoing series of protests in Malé by youth, demanding justice for Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed.

Among the protesters’ demands was a call for Shujau’s resignation.

The public has also heavily criticized the statements made by Shujau during the press conference held by the police regarding the case.
