Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan has stated that there is nothing that can be considered “criminal” in the case of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's threatening renowned journalist and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ‘Adhadhu’ news, Hussain Fiyaz Moosa.
During Wednesday's sitting of the People’s Majlis, MP for South Galolhu constituency Meekail Ahmed Naseem inquired about the additional security measures taken by the Maldives Police Service (MPS) to protect Fiyaz in connection with the warning issued by the country’s leader.
In response to this, Minister Ihusaan highlighted that the Prosecutor General's Office has made a decision regarding the case, and upon investigation, nothing that could be considered “criminal” was identified. He also said that on March 25, Fiyaz himself had informed the police that he did not require security.
In addition to this, Minister Ihusaan added that following a threat Fiyaz received in 2023, an assessment was conducted and security was provided back then.
In connection with Minister Ihusaan's statements, the lawmaker further inquired to what extent it is ensured that the president and the government do not influence the police institution in investigations related to families of politically linked individuals and those with power, among the cases being investigated by the police institution.
In response to this, Minister Ihusaan said that things will not happen now as they did in the Safari case that churned major public outcry in the Maldives, a few years ago.
Ihusaan added that neither President Muizzu nor any state entity would influence the police institution, and that this is something he can give his full assurance on. He also said that no instructions would be given for any case being investigated by the police, and that they would have full authority to conduct the investigation independently.
