The National Congress of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has approved the formation of a committee to hold an extraordinary congress of the MDP before August 15.
The decision was made at the 22nd meeting of the fourth term of the MDP National Congress.
While deciding to form a committee regarding holding the extraordinary MDP congress, it was also approved at the National Congress meeting on Saturday night that the committee should submit its report to the National Congress before May 15. This decision was passed with 75 votes.
The meeting of the National Congress held on Saturday night approved for the committee to work towards holding the congress before August 15.
Similarly, with the support of 71 members, it was approved at that meeting to establish a Rapid Response Team.
81 members participated in Saturday night’s meeting.
The responsibilities of the committee formed to hold the congress include proposing dates for holding the congress, and making proposals regarding arrangements and expenses for the congress.
The objectives of the committee include comparing, identifying, and responding to government decisions that affect the country's democracy, governance, and public interest.
As such, it is the purpose of the committee to identify government decisions and policies, and to examine political, economic and social decisions made by the government. It is also the purpose of this committee to monitor government actions and share concerns about government decisions and policies with the public through media, statements and other platforms.
In addition to this, organizing peaceful political activities and gatherings at the national level through the grassroots is also among the responsibilities of the team. When necessary, it is also within the mandate of the committee to carry out work that needs to be done legally and through the People's Majlis.
The work of the committee will be carried out under the direct supervision of the party leadership.
