President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has concluded his visit to Liverpool City in the United Kingdom.
The Maldivian leader departed for the United Kingdom on 1 April 2025.
According to the President's Office, the trip was to participate in the launching of a co-brand campaign activity being conducted in collaboration with Liverpool Football Club (Liverpool FC) and Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) / Visit Maldives to promote Maldives tourism.
During the trip, the Maldivian leader observed the football game that launched the Maldives tourism campaign. He also visited the AXA Training Center and observed how high-level football training and coaching are conducted.
As part of the trip, the president met with Maldivian students in the UK. In the meeting with the Maldivian students, the president inquired about the progress of their education and their experiences. Muizzu also assured the students pursuing higher education that the government would pay special attention to resolving the difficulties they are currently facing.
Under the partnership established with Liverpool FC, Visit Maldives launched an extensive outdoor campaign in the UK on March 27. According to the President's Office, this three-month campaign will include outdoor and digital advertising activities in some strategic areas of the UK.
As such, the President's Office stated that the Visit Maldives brand will be advertised to many people on 100 taxis in London, buses, the London Underground, airports, and business class lounges.
In addition to this, the President's Office revealed that on days when Premier League matches are played at Anfield, LED signage will be displayed in the stadium, and the Maldives brand will be advertised in Liverpool FC's official brochures and on billboards across various parts of Europe, working to promote tourism on an international level.
However, although President Muizzu participated in the ceremony to launch the co-brand campaign activity to promote the Maldives in collaboration with the club, as the Maldives became the official tourist destination of Team Liverpool FC, not even a single photo was shared on any of the club's social media handles. Further, during his visit to the club's stadium, no senior official of the club was seen accompanying the Maldivian leader.
While the players were preparing for the match, President Muizzu, along with Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu, and MMPRC’s Managing Director Ibrahim Shiuree, took a few photos on the field before the game started. In these photos, they were holding a Liverpool jersey with number 25 and 'Visit Maldives' printed on it.
Several have been criticizing the government, asserting that President Muizzu went to the stadium as a visitor.
