10 foreigners arrested for drug smuggling attempt

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has arrested 10 foreigners on suspicion of attempting to smuggle seven kilograms of drugs into the Maldives by sea.

The arrested individuals, suspected of attempting to smuggle drugs into the Maldives on a boat, include nationals from India and Indonesia.

Their remand periods were issued on Friday.

The case involves foreign nationals from India and Indonesia working together to attempt to smuggle drugs into the Maldives by sea. The court order does not specify which country's vessel was involved.

Of the 10 foreigners arrested by the police, five were remanded for five days by the Criminal Court. The remaining five were remanded for one day.

Individuals arrested include:

  • Ganesh Bonmali, India, 22: remanded for five days
  • Peter Vini, India, 28: remanded for five days
  • Prabhakaran Nagarajan, India, 35: remanded for five days
  • Adriansyah, Indonesia, 25: remanded for five days
  • Muhammad Iqbal Makmur, Indonesia, 30: remanded for five days
  • Datkhile Darshan Vijay, India, 22: remanded for one day
  • Saran Padman, India, 26: remanded for one day
  • Naswan Adil, Indonesia, 30: remanded for one day
  • Romans Santhiya Fernando, India, 58: remanded for one day
  • Govsick Raj James Knox, India, 30: remanded for one day

According to the Criminal Court order, these 10 individuals are suspected of drug smuggling and trafficking.

The court order states that some evidence has been presented against them in the case, and according to the statements of the police officers who went to the scene, seven kilograms of drugs were found on the vessel where these individuals were present.

The police institution has not released any details regarding the case yet.
