Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has come under public scrutiny after delivering vague and unclear responses to questions posed by foreign journalists during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to the Maldives, which coincided with the country’s Independence Day celebrations.
The Vice President, speaking in English, appeared unprepared and struggled to articulate clear answers when approached by members of the Indian news agency ANI. In response to a question about the significance of the visit, Latheef said haltingly, “That's… Maldives… We are very happy to welcome His Excellency. It was very productive.”
Pressed further on details of his meeting with Prime Minister Modi, Latheef repeated a similarly disjointed response: “It was very productive meeting. Very very happy to welcome His Excellency.”
The clip has since circulated widely online, drawing criticism from commentators and members of the public who expressed disappointment over what they viewed as a lack of preparedness and professionalism in handling international media.
The criticism has not been limited to the Vice President. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has also faced backlash for similarly unclear and minimal responses to foreign journalists at high-profile events.
Critics argue that the inability of the country’s top leaders to effectively communicate, particularly on the international stage, reflects poorly on the Maldives. Many have voiced concern that such appearances damage the nation’s image and credibility, especially during diplomatic engagements with global partners.
