Over 100 accidents in first 10 days of Ramadan; another dangerous crash reported on Thursday

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has revealed that more than 100 accidents were reported in the congested capital, Malé City during the first 10 days of Ramadan alone.

According to statistics released by the police institution, road accidents were the most reported incidents during the first 10 days of Ramadan. MPS highlighted that 153 accidents were reported.

The police institution stated that the number of accidents in Malé City increases every year during Ramadan.

On Thursday, a dangerous accident occurred involving two motorcycles colliding in the area where vehicles exit from Sinamalé Bridge onto Malé.

The police institution noted that the report of the accident was received at around 10:21am on Thursday, and both motorcycle riders were injured in the accident. They were taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for treatment, and the police institution highlighted that they have received information that no serious injuries were sustained.

In addition to this, the police institution revealed that both riders had valid licenses, and that they are investigating further aspects of the incident.

In addition to accidents, the police institution revealed that the number of reported theft and robbery cases increases during Ramadan as well. As such, to ensure a safe and secure environment for the general public during this year's Ramadan, MPS has increased their presence in several areas of Malé City.

The police institution said that during the first 10 days of Ramadan, 147 theft cases, 110 drug-related cases, 40 assault cases, 48 property damage cases, eight robbery cases, eight forgery cases, 13 fraud cases, 19 domestic violence cases, 38 threat cases, seven cybercrime cases, 70 scam cases, 15 sexual harassment cases, and 16 child abuse cases were reported.
