An issue has surfaced where a senior employee of Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC), a government company, is mocking the citizens who are seeking their housing rights, on social media.

Aminath Seena Mohamed, a senior employee of FDC, has been mocking and ridiculing people who are coming out to claim their rights after their flats were taken away from them. This is despite the fact that under the housing policy of the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the first 4,000 flats built under the Hiyaa housing scheme had their recipients determined, lists gazetted, and agreements signed with those parties, but many were later disqualified by the incumbent administration of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and their flats were taken away.

Referring to those seeking their rights after their flats were taken away, she has made jokes and mocked them social media platform ‘X’. She has said that they are begging to increase the number of people at the protests. She has also jokingly questioned whether all citizens from across the Maldives can participate in these gatherings every night.

The first 4,000 flats built under the Hiyaa housing scheme were constructed by the government through FDC. The agreements with the flat recipients were signed by the company on behalf of the government. The handover of the flats to the recipients was also planned to be carried out through this company.

After a senior employee of the company had mocked the citizens who are working to claim their rights to these flats, some people have been questioning whether the senior officials of the company can work with impartiality.

The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has been leading nightly protests in support of those whose flats were taken away. The party has stated that these protests will continue in a series.

The incumbent administration has now opened for complaints regarding the flat list they announced. However, many people are expressing concerns on social media because they are not given the opportunity to submit documents when filing complaints.
