It has been revealed that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is investigating a corruption case involving Mohamed Afeef Hussain, who was appointed by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu as the Chairman of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).

RaajjeMV has obtained documents confirming that the anti-corruption watchdog is investigating a corruption case against Afeef.

The case states that a letter was written on official state letterhead and signed in official capacity to register a private individual's car in a state ministry's garage, and according to information received, the car belonged to Mohamed Afeef Hussain, a former member of the Special People's Majlis.

Upon investigating the case, the commission found that Mohamed Afeef Hussain had attempted to obtain permission to garage the car with registration number BB1AP9712 at the Public Works Services Department.

Sufficient evidence and proof has been obtained through investigation to establish that acts of corruption as specified in Article 513(b), Article 90(a), Article 81(a), and Article 82(a) of Law No. 9/2021 or the Maldives Penal Code, were committed in this case.

Further, under Article 25(a)(2) of Law No. 13/2008 or the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, this case has been determined to be a case involving corruption, Mohamed Afeef Hussain of M. Wayside 304, capital Malé City and since ACC has decided to forward the case to the Prosecutor General's Office to file charges against him for acts of corruption as specified in Law No. 9/2014, consultations are ongoing between the Prosecutor General's Office and the Commission regarding the decision to press charges against him.

However, no official statement has been received from ACC and the PG Office regarding the matter.

Afeef was appointed as the Chairman of MTCC on 24 December 2023.

He earlier held senior positions at several state-owned companies. As such, Afeef has served as the Chairman of State Electric Company (STELCO) as well as Fenaka Corporation. Further, he also served as the Director General of the Ministry of Housing and Planning. Afeef currently holds a civil service position and serves as the Director General at the Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works. Afeef has completed higher education in the legal field.
