The Parliamentary Group of the main ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) has issued a whip to support rejecting the no-confidence motion against Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan.
Just moments before this, the PNC Parliamentary Group had issued a whip line instructing members to pass a vote of confidence in Ihusaan, directing all members to vote to reject the no-confidence motion submitted by the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and demonstrate support for Ihusaan by voting to reject the motion.
The no-confidence motion against Minister Ihusaan was submitted to the parliament and was scheduled for Tuesday's sitting, where the minister was summoned for questioning.
The no-confidence motion against Minister Ihusaan was submitted to the parliament on January 17.
The motion, signed and submitted by 12 lawmakers representing the main opposition party, states that it was filed under Article 101(a) of the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives due to actions that explicitly violate the Constitution and laws in carrying out the responsibilities assigned to Cabinet members under Article 132 of the Constitution and in exercising the powers vested in them as Cabinet members, as well as continuing to engage in actions that Cabinet members are prohibited from doing under Article 136(b) of the Constitution.
The case noted that the Minister of Homeland Security and Technology is the minister responsible for the Department of National Registration (DNR), which is tasked with maintaining the personal information of Maldivian citizens, Maldives Immigration, which maintains travel records of Maldivian citizens, and the Communications Authority of Maldives, which regulates companies providing telephone and internet services.
The case states that while Ali Ihusaan was the authority figure of Maldives Police Service (MPS), his actions in violation of the Constitution and laws include criminal offenses.
In addition to this, the case has noted that if he remains in his ministerial position, there is a clear possibility that he could obstruct the criminal investigation against him. Therefore, it was noted in the matter that his continued holding of the position is believed to be a matter that could compromise the rights of Maldivian citizens and threaten the safety and security of the Maldives.
