The government has stated that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu met with Speaker of the People’s Majlis Abdul Raheem Abdulla to discuss bills to be submitted by the government.

President Muizzu and Speaker Abdul Raheem met on Thursday morning.

Providing information regarding the meeting, the Chief Spokesperson at the President’s Office, Heena Waleed revealed that the president met with Parliament Speaker as well as the Parliamentary Group leader of the main ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) Ibrahim Falah on Thursday.

Heena said that during Thursday’s meeting, they discussed the bills that the government plans to submit to the Parliament in the newly-commenced session this year. She also highlighted that the meeting was similar to the consultative meetings held at the beginning of each session last year as well.

Photos of Abdul Raheem’s car entering through the gates of the President's Office circulated on social media on Thursday.

At a time Abdul Raheem has called on President Muizzu, the speaker had previously stated that the relationship between the two had soured.

That was the day when Ibrahim Faisal, son of the speaker, was dismissed from his position as the Minister of Tourism.

In an interview given to a Maldivian media outlet in Malaysia the same day, Abdul Raheem said that if the close relationship that existed with President Muizzu at the beginning of this administration had remained, his son Faisal would not have been removed from his position.

Abdul Raheem added that Faisal had been carrying out his assigned duties and responsibilities very thoroughly, and that he had no idea whatsoever, why President Muizzu decided to dismiss him from his position.

After cutting his trip short, when Abdul Raheem returned to Malé, rumors had spread that his relationship with President Muizzu had severely deteriorated.

Some parliamentarians representing the main ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) had also stated at the time that discussions were held about removing Abdul Raheem from the position of Speaker of the People’s Majlis.

While rumors spread about the severely deteriorated relationship between the two, officials in the government who have connections with Abdul Raheem have been dismissed from their positions as well.

This includes senior executives of state-owned companies. Following the incident, Abdul Raheem has not spoken to the media since arriving in the Maldives.
