The handball court in Guraidhoo island of Kaafu atoll, which was initiated during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, has been officially unveiled by the current administration.
Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu officially inaugurated the handball court in Guraidhoo.
A special ceremony was held in Guraidhoo for this occasion.
Taking to social media to reveal this, the Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recreation stated that the Guraidhoo handball court has been completed and officially inaugurated as part of the program to complete stalled sports projects, which included ones in President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's pledges.
The Guraidhoo handball court project was initiated by the then Ministry of Sports during former President Solih's government, entrusting it to the island council.
As such, on 20 January 2022, the island council was tasked with announcing the project, evaluating the submitted bids, and presenting them to the ministry.
A budget of MVR 1,502,440.78 was allocated for the project.
The current administration has been opening sports infrastructure projects initiated by the previous government across several regions of the island nation. The government is carrying this out under the program to complete stalled sports projects.
However, when the former administration ended and the incumbent administration began, many of the projects continued and were not halted.
Some projects initiated by the former administration were inaugurated during the incumbent president’s recent tour of some islands in January 2025.
