President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has returned home after concluding his official visit to the Republic of Estonia.
The Maldivian leader’s visit to Estonia came upon the official invitation of the President of Estonia Dr. Alar Karis.
The Maldivian president and his delegation were welcomed at Estonia by the Estonian President. The welcoming ceremony was held at the Presidential Palace in Estonia. During the welcoming ceremony, the Maldivian president and Estonia’s President inspected the guard of honor presented in their honor. The two presidents also took a commemorative photograph together. As part of the visit, the leaders of the two countries discussed ways to further solidify bilateral relations.
During the Maldivian president's visit, he held constructive discussions with the Estonian President, Speaker of Parliament, Ministers, Mayor of Tartu, representatives from the education sector, and leaders of other notable institutions. These meetings mainly revolved around discussions on identifying ways to solidify relations between the two countries. The Estonian government and institutions expressed their readiness to cooperate with and work alongside the Maldives.
Further, three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed during the visit. These include an MoU between the Maldivian government and Estonian government on information exchange and cooperation in the areas of climate change, environment, and energy; an MoU to initiate political consultations between the two countries; and an MoU between the Maldivian Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology and the Estonian Ministry of Justice and Digital Affairs.
During the Maldivian leader’s visit, he toured several sites holding cultural significance in Estonia. These include visits to the e-Estonia Briefing Centre, Kumu Art Museum, Tartu Town Hall, University of Tartu, Estonian Biobank, Estonian National Museum (ERM), and Greenergy Data Centers (GDC). During these visits, representatives of the institutions shared information about their work and discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations.
The president’s recent visit has greatly contributed to realizing his vision of digitalizing the Maldives. Progress has been made in efforts to address the vulnerabilities of climate change. In addition to this, during the Maldivian president's visit, the commitment to cooperate in beneficial areas on multilateral platforms between the two countries was further strengthened. Under the president’s leadership, special emphasis is being given to digitalizing the Maldives, paving the way for sustainable development, establishing international relations, and strengthening ties.
