The MDP's National Congress on 9 January 2025, decided to take to the streets in defense of the Constitution

Member of Parliament for South Galolhu constituency, Meekail Ahmed Naseem, has asserted that the incumbent administration of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has committed the biggest identity theft in the history of the island nation.

He made these remarks in an interview with RaajjeTV during the door-to-door campaign related to the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s upcoming “Fudhijje, Fundijje” rally.

There have been ongoing allegations that during the membership drive conducted by the main ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) to reach 100,000 members under the guidance and advice of President Muizzu, the Home Sector team collected personal information from the Department of National Registration (DNR) and filled out forms. It was also alleged that Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan was at the forefront of this effort, which both the ministry and the minister have repeatedly denied. However, despite repeated denials, photos of the home minister working inside DNR filling out forms have since been leaked on social media.

In connection with this, it has been decided to submit a no-confidence motion against the home minister. Referring to this issue, Meekail said he believes this was done directly under the president's supervision. The MDP lawmaker heavily criticized the incumbent administration, noting that this act was an abuse of state resources for illegitimate gain.

Urging the people to stand up against such thefts and send a message to the government, the MDP lawmaker said that the government is very well-off and that it's important to participate in the gathering slated for January 31 to voice public disapproval of the government. The MDP lawmaker has said that people need to come out and make their voices heard to the government.

The MDP's National Congress on 9 January 2025, decided to take to the streets in defense of the Constitution of the Maldives. The main opposition political party, MDP, decided to take to the streets after proposing and passing it in their National Congress meeting. During the meeting, the chair proposed to take to the streets on January 31 "in defense of the constitution." The gathering slated for January 31 will be held in the evening, as a walk.
