Approval has been sought from the People’s Majlis on Moomina Waheed’s appointment to the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).

Her name was forwarded for parliamentary approval, to be appointed as the Deputy President of HRCM.

The appointment has been sent to the Human Rights and Gender Committee of the People's Majlis for review.

The People's Majlis on Thursday held an extraordinary sitting.

At the beginning of Thursday’s sitting, the administrative desk read out the letter sent by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to the parliament regarding the appointment.

The letter stated that the name of M. Jeena, Moomina Waheed, who is to be appointed as a member of the commission, is being sent for appointment as the Deputy President of HRCM. The president has requested the parliament to greenlight the appointment as they see fit.

HRCM was established in December 2003 by a Presidential decree as an independent commission with the power to press charges and be charged under its own name.

The president of HRCM is Maryam Muna. In addition to Moomina, the other members of the commission are Ismail Habeeb Abdul Raheem, Aminath Shifaath Abdul Razzaq, and Samau Ahmed Najeeb.
