The governments of Maldives and Estonia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to exchange information and cooperate in the areas of climate change, environment, and energy.

The MoU was signed on behalf of the Maldives by Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Abdulla Khaleel. Estonia’s Minister of Climate Yoko Alender signed on behalf of the government of Estonia.

The MoU on Knowledge Exchange, Cooperation and Support in the Field of Climate Change, Environment and Energy aims to strengthen collaboration on climate action, environmental sustainability, and clean energy solutions.

The agreement was signed during a courtesy call paid by the Estonian Minister of Climate, to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

Speaking at the meeting held on Monday, the Maldivian president highlighted the efforts being made to make the Maldives an environmentally friendly country. He also emphasized the importance of sustainable energy solutions in achieving this vision for the Maldives.

The Maldivian leader also highlighted the importance of Estonia's experience in the field of renewable energy. In addition to this the president noted that Estonia's innovative approaches in renewable energy, smart grids, and sustainable technology would greatly help in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reducing energy costs, and increasing the Maldives' environmental resilience.

During the meeting, Minister Yoko Alender shed light on the challenges faced by small countries like the Maldives and Estonia. She particularly emphasized the challenges in achieving sustainable energy solutions to cope with climate change. In her remarks, she also shed light on the significance of finding cost-effective and balanced strategic digital solutions. She also mentioned the role of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in Estonia's climate and sustainability efforts.

Minister Yoko assured that Estonia is ready to work together with the Maldives.
