According to statistics, the proportion of drug-related cases submitted last year is less compared to the previous year

Statistics from the Maldives Police Service (MPS) have shown that the number of accidents reported in the past year had increased alarmingly.

According to last year's statistics, cases related to theft and drugs submitted to the police during the past year decreased.

Police statistics went on to reveal that the most frequently reported cases last year were theft cases recorded at 3,750 cases. The previous year, 3,817 cases of theft were submitted.

The next most reported were traffic accident cases. As such, 2,867 cases were reported. This is an increase of 567 cases compared to the cases submitted in 2023. That year, 2,300 cases were reported.

Most accidents occurred in the capital Malé region. In March, when accident cases were highest, 301 cases were submitted.

While the number of accidents increased, many dangerous accidents occurred in the past year. Many people suffered serious injuries due to road accident while some people died.

According to statistics, the proportion of drug-related cases submitted last year is less compared to the previous year. While 1,662 drug cases were reported, 1,752 cases related to drugs were submitted in 2023.

Among other cases submitted to the police institution, 1,028 cases related to lost items were submitted, 711 cases of assault, and 665 cases of property damage were also reported. In addition to this, 654 cases of fraud, 504 cases of robbery, 316 cases of sexual harassment, 248 cases of domestic violence, and 166 cases of forgery were reported.

The relevant authorities have been solidifying their efforts to reduce crime and enhance public safety of recent. In response to rising concerns, law enforcement authorities have increased their activities significantly. Additional resources were deployed to high-risk areas and visible presence was ensured across the capital region last year. Further, other initiatives and programs are being conducted to increase public awareness about crime prevention, safety protocols, and community engagement.

According to the police institution, these efforts aim to prevent criminal activities and empower citizens with the knowledge and tools needed to protect themselves and their neighborhoods.

Authorities worked tirelessly to create a safer environment for everyone throughout the year.
