Amid mounting frustration, fishermen are gearing up for a massive rally, demanding that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu honor the promises made to secure their livelihoods and protect their future.
The event, organized by the Bodu Kanneli Masveringe Union (BKMU) to coincide with the National Fishermen's Day celebrated in the Maldives, is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at the Hulhumalé Fishermen's Harbor.
Several fishing vessels, their owners, and crew members are set to participate in the event.
The organizers are currently making final preparations for the event. They stated that during the afternoon’s event, fishermen will express their concerns and call on the government to fulfill the promises made to them. The participating vessels have banners displaying the government's promises to fishermen.
Fishermen have been continuously expressing their concerns over the unfulfilled promises made by President Muizzu during his campaign for presidency. They have raised complaints about issues such as lowering fish prices, delayed payments for fish catches, and increased difficulties in obtaining fuel. Fishermen have even staged protests on several occasions due to delays in receiving payments for their fish catches.
