The government has announced that work is underway to open a Maldivian embassy in Italy.

This was revealed by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

The president made this statement while speaking at the official ceremony held at Dharubaaruge on Sunday to commemorate this year’s Republic Day.

President Muizzu stated that his aim is to maintain close relations with all countries. He also said that strengthening foreign relations with countries is a goal of his administration.

He added that work is presently underway to open embassies in several foreign countries.

The president has highlighted that permission has been granted to open a Maldivian embassy in Italy.

Further, he noted that the necessary work is being carried out to open an embassy in Italy.

He highlighted that this decision is crucial for the growth of Maldives’ tourism and was made with that goal in mind.

The president stated that embassies and high commissions will be established in locations that benefit the country, serve Maldivians, and support key business ties.

Italy is one of the Maldives' top tourism markets, ranking as the fifth-largest source of visitors in 2024. So far this year, 116,195 Italian tourists have arrived in the Maldives.

Maldives currently has 16 embassies across the globe.
