Maldives Customs Service has seized a total of 5.9 kilograms of drugs that were being smuggled into the country by air.

The drugs were seized during further inspection after suspicious substances were found while examining an air freight shipment brought into the country.

On 31 October 2024, customs officials conducted further inspection on an air freight shipment brought to the Maldives from Bangkok, following suspicions that drugs were concealed in the shipment.

Upon further inspection, customs officials discovered substances suspected to be narcotics.

In the initial analysis of testing, the substances tested positive for two different types of drugs: Cathinone weighing 416 grams and Cannabis weighing 5,520 grams.

The street value of the confiscated drugs is estimated to be MVR 3,348,000.00.

The total weight of the drugs seized in connection with the case is 5.9 kilograms.

The confiscated drugs and a 45-year-old Maldivian man involved in the case have since been handed over to the Maldives Police Service (MPS) for further investigation.
