A youth has been remanded for theft.

Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that Anoof Abdul Ghani, 27 and native to Naifaru island of Lhaviyani atoll, was arrested under accusations of theft.

The man has a criminal record.

Criminal Court remanded the suspect for a 15-day period on Friday.

He is accused of stealing from the local market.

The court cited reasons for his remand order, being that sufficient evidence has been presented to prove that he had committed the alleged offense.

Police officers who went to the scene submitted an incident report and a statement from the complainant as well.

The conditions for remand are based on Article 49 of the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives and Articles 59 and 60 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The suspect has asserted that he does not want legal representation.

He claimed that he was carrying four bottles of a local product, however, they were not stolen. He said he found them left by someone and picked them up.

The suspect told MPS officers at the scene that he took four bottles of a local product from under a pickup truck.

In addition to this, Anoof is to have said he requires plastic surgery and had an appointment for the coming week.

However, the Investigative Officer noted that no medical documents were available.

The suspect was detained in connection with several cases, even before.

He is a suspect of this case, where the person in charge of stall number 154 at the local market, reported to the police about four missing bottles at his stall.
