Maldives Customs Service has seized drugs that were being smuggled into the Maldives via air.

The drugs were confiscated during inspections of an air cargo shipment and a postal package that arrived in the Maldives on September 18 as well as a 65-year-old Maldivian man who arrived in the Maldives on September 16 on Sri Lankan Airlines flight UL103.

Upon testing the substances suspected of being narcotics, customs officials found that the substances tested positive for four different types of narcotics.

The seized narcotics include 349 grams of heroin, 582 grams of synthetic cathinone, 5.21 kilograms of cannabis as well as 2.87 kilograms of ecstasy.

According to the customs department, the passenger and the seized narcotics have been handed over to the Maldives Police Service (MPS) for further investigations.
