Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has strongly condemned the ongoing mass layoffs of employees at the Road Development Corporation (RDC) site in Alifushi island of Raa atoll.

The main-opposition party has released a press statement condemning the act.

In its statement, MDP’s Alifushi Branch stated that 22 employees at the Alifushi RDC site have been dismissed, all at once.

Further, seven additional employees were instructed to transfer to a different work site.

The statement goes on to read that the incumbent administration has done this in violation of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge during the 2023 presidential election campaign that no employee of state-owned companies, would be sacked.

MDP highlighted that it is unacceptable to cut off the income of so many families and put them through hardship during such an economic crisis.

The opposition party stressed that while regular employees have been facing “oppression”, the Alifushi RDC site has observed an unprecedented surge in new senior positions.

With this, MDP has urged the government to immediately halt the terminations of employees and not to break pledges.
