Athama Abdul Latheef

Abdul Latheef Hussain Manik, more commonly known as Athama Abdul Latheef has passed away.

Abdul Latheef was a renowned businessman and made several contributions to the service of escorting and organizing Hajj pilgrimage for Maldivians.

He passed away at the age of 94, while seeking treatment for an illness at ADK Hospital some time on Monday.

Known as a prominent stakeholder in bringing many positive changes to the economy of the island nation, Abdul Latheef was at the forefront of Maldivian businessmen and has been a figure who has time and time again proven what locals can spearhead by themselves, with courage and resilience.

Having been involved in multiple businesses at a large scale, Abdul Latheef took his first steps into the business world as a hardware seller and went on to provide services in organizing Hajj pilgrimage, the tourism industry as well as constructing mosques and teaching.

Abdul Latheef won the respect and affection of the public through his many years of diligent services and also took the lead in spending for the welfare of communities as well as promoting religious activities.

Further, he was awarded the National Award in 1991 in recognition of his exceptional work.

Following his passing, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu offered condolences via a post on social media platform ‘X’.

Highlighting that the country has lost an invaluable, experienced and exemplary personality who has done great work for the country, Muizzu offered a prayer for patience for the bereaved family of the deceased in this hour of grief.

He noted that the entire nation joins the family in mourning his death.

In a post on ‘X’, former Vice President Faisal Naseem noted that he was a national worker who facilitated Hajj pilgrimage for many throughout several years.

He also prayed for patience for the family, and for the departed to be granted eternal peace.
