Two individuals have been arrested for attempting to assault a prison officer.
In a publication on Monday, the Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that two individuals on a motorcycle attacked the prison guard on his motorcycle, from behind.
The prison guard, posted at Hulhumalé Prison, was attacked with a hammer.
Arrested in connection with the case were Ahmed Iyaaz, 24 and native to Inguraidhoo island of Raa atoll and Ahmed Rabeeu, 26 and native to Maamendhoo island of Gaaf Alif atoll.
The case was filed at the police institution on June 11.
After receiving the case, police camera footage and additional camera footage from the scene of the incident were scanned and it was found that two men wearing helmets on a motorcycle were spying on the officers exiting Hulhumalé Prison.
Police investigations have confirmed that the two men seen in the video footage were the ones who tried to attack the prison officer.
Iyaaz was arrested while he was in hiding, in Baarah island of Haa Alif atoll, on June 14.
Rabeeu was also arrested while he was in hiding at a guesthouse in the capital city, on June 20.
Both arrests were made under a court order.
Upon being presented to the court for their remand hearing, the two suspects were jailed pending the end of the investigation.
The prison officer did not attain any injuries in the attempted assault.
The police institution is presently conducting further investigations into the case, being probed as a “serious” case.
