The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has unveiled their strategic plan for the next five years.
Titled the Maldives Police Service's Strategic Plan 2024-2028, the plan was launched during a special ceremony held at Iskandar Building on Wednesday.
The strategic plan was unveiled by Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan.
The ceremony was attended by Commission of Police Ali Shujau, Deputy Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen, Deputy Commissioner of Police Faruhaadh Fikuree as well as executive officers, commissioned officers and other officers of the police institution.
The strategic plan for police services in the next five years sheds light on five key priorities.
Combating criminal threats.
This includes efforts to strengthen the central and regional capabilities of the MPS to make the country a safe place for all, combating drug abuse, gang crimes, requiring illegal migrant workers and human trafficking, bringing an end to robbery, extortion, trafficking, traffic violations, cyber crime, terrorism, violence, cases of fraud, extremism, domestic violence, assault against women and children as well as cases of public disorder.
Prioritizing community engagement and policing.
This includes efforts to strengthen the relationship between the police institution and communities nationwide, as well as to improve public safety through a community policing model.
Modernizing and upgrading police infrastructure and practice.
This includes efforts to ensure departments work together to develop and implement a long-term plan that will help in upgrading and modernizing the physical infrastructure technology and other facilities required to expand and improve the quality of services provided by MPS the public, through strategic investments.
Fostering effective governance and leadership development.
This includes efforts to improve the quality of police services, departments, systems, processes, regulations, policies and procedures established within them and to prioritize efforts to review and improve, ensuring co-policing functions and the leadership approach are strengthened at all levels to ensure the quality of services provided by building skilled, competent and healthy personnel.
Ensuring accountability and ethical conduct.
To ensure MPS is transparent, professionalism is upheld and a culture of integrity is established to maintain the faith the public has in the police institution.
MPS revealed that a lot of efforts will be made to improve the quality of their services in the next five years, with the inauguration of their strategic plan. The police institution highlighted that important objectives will be achieved through these efforts.
As such, MPS will be able to establish a special team to crack down on cases of drug trafficking, gang violence, on a national scale. Further, an anti-scam center will also be established to reduce cases of scams and a local policing strategy will be developed to further develop neighborhood policing, which will be implemented in all parts of the country.
The police institution also said that a digital data and technology command will be established to facilitate the implementation of future-focused and data-driven policing, efforts will be made to improve police services in urban centers and efforts will also be made to develop police basic skills further.
In addition to initiating mid-career training programs for all levels of leadership, a policing professional framework will be implemented and the use of this framework in the governance and decision-making system of the entire organization will begin.
