Having filled multiple roles in tax and audit-related positions since 2000, Zareer most recently served as the Director of Finance (Group Shared Financial Services) and Group Chief Compliance Officer at Villa Shipping and Trading Company Pvt. Ltd.

Further, the new Commissioner General of Taxation served as the Chairman of the Bank of Maldives as well. He filled this position from 7 March 2024 to 23 May 2024.

His appointment was approved at the last sitting of the 19th tenure of the People’s Majlis, with the votes of 41 out of 48 parliamentarians present.

The position was vacated and nominations were opened following the resignation of the former Commissioner General of Taxation Fathuhullah Jameel.

He tendered his resignation from the post to contest in the recent parliamentary elections for the 20th parliament tenure.

For the appointment of Commissioner General of Taxation under the Administrative Act of Taxation, Yazeed Mohamed, who held the position during former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's tenure, was at the top of the list finalized by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, with Zareer in the second spot.

The economic committee had approved the appointment of Zareer to the post.

Yazeed lost the position in 2019, following an amendment to the administrative law on taxes at the time.
