The government has revealed that the education of the School of Medicine students will continue at Dharumavantha Hospital.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has instructed relevant authorities to ensure that students studying in the School of Medicine at the university continue their education at Dharumavantha Hospital without any disruptions, in response to an appeal made by the Maldives National University Students' Union (MNUSU).

MNUSU addressed a letter to the president on 23 April 2024, following which the Minister at the President's Office for Strategic Communications arranged a meeting at the President's Office with representatives from relevant government agencies and student representatives.

This was arranged as per the president’s request.

MNU’s School of Medicine students had expressed concerns regarding the possible loss of access to space at Dharumavantha Hospital for educational purposes.

Following this, the President’s Office on Thursday announced that students enrolled in the MNU School of Medicine will be able to continue their education at Dharumavantha Hospital as before.

Speaking at a meeting held at the President’s Office, MNU officials revealed that this decision mirrors the president’s prioritization of issues surfacing for students, particularly in offering opportunities for higher education students.

Representatives from MNU’s students' union and the School of Medicine expressed mutual confidence that the president would heed the voices of higher education students, and implement the most effective solutions to their concerns.

Following discussions, President Muizzu assured that the concerns of students will be addressed swiftly and that the government would implement arrangements to alleviate any disruptions to their studies.

The President’s Office went on to note that President Muizzu remains committed in efforts to address matters linked to students, as well as to improve the quality of healthcare within the limits of the state's fiscal situation.

There are ongoing initiatives to implement a specialized educational facility that is equipped with state-of-the-art amenities required for research by students of MNU’s School of Medicine, presently.

In addition to this, efforts are also ongoing to increase both the size and the number of beds available for patients at IGMH and Dharumavantha Hospital.

The government revealed that both hospitals are in the process of introducing new healthcare services to improve patient care.
