An 18-year-old has been arrested for drug possession.

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) sought a remand order from the Criminal Court.

The Criminal Court has remanded him for 10 days. His remand period will expire on May 7.

He has been remanded at a custodial prison.

One of the reasons cited for his remand, was that sufficient evidence to show that the accused had committed the alleged crime, was submitted.

As such, the statement of a police officer who was at the scene of the arrest, and an analysis report of his urine sample tests were submitted as evidence.

His urine sample had tested positive to THC, according to the police institution.

His remand was described necessary as the safety and security of the community could be compromised in view of Article 49 of the Constitution of Maldives, and Sections 59 and 60 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Further, the reason cited for the remand was that the provisions of Section 13(c) 1, 3 and 4 of the Code of Criminal Procedure were met.

The 18-year-old has a record of arrests and remands.

The IO has revealed that the drugs confiscated in connection with the case, weighed 1,050 grams.
