A case has been filed at the Maldives Police Service (MPS), regarding the recent break-ins, vandalization and theft of transformer parts of the State Electric Company (STELCO).
Managing Director of STELCO, Hussain Fahmy revealed that the issue of some individuals damaging the locks of their substations, turning off the transformers and stealing several parts of the transformers, recently came into the spotlight.
He added that the case has been lodged at the police institution.
Stressing that the damage to transformers and theft of transformer parts had led to power outages reported from several parts of Hulhumalé on Thursday morning as well as Friday evening and night, Fahmy highlighted that this is a major obstruction of STELCO’s efforts to ensure the provision of round-the-clock power supply
Further, he said that this is a big threat to the culprits as well.
Fahmy has urged relevant authorities to find and stop those indulging in these activities and take action against them and the people who buy the stolen parts.
Power outages were reported in several regions of the capital’s suburbs including the Hiyaa Towers. This had led to some of the residents being stuck in the Hiyaa elevators for a long time.
