A Pakistani national has been arrested for attempting to smuggle drugs into the Maldives.
Maldives Customs Service in a press release issued on Wednesday, revealed that the Pakistani national had arrived at Velana International Airport (VIA) from Doha, Qatar on March 12.
The 56-year-old man’s luggage was searched upon suspicious behavior, following which customs officials found a package filled with suspected narcotics.
The substances found inside the man’s luggage tested positive for Heroin in the first stage of analysis.
Along with the packing, the drugs weighed 5.30 kilograms in total.
Customs revealed that the drugs had a street value of MVR 5,300,000.
The Pakistani national, along with the drugs he attempted to smuggle into the island nation, have been handed over to the Maldives Police Service (MPS).
Further investigations are currently underway.
