Hussain Siraj has been elected as the new president of the Bar Council of Maldives.
The Bar Council elected Siraj as its new president on Sunday, at the council’s elected to elect members to the vacant seats of their Executive Committee.
Voting in the election was held online, through the ‘FahiVote’ online web application to elect members to the vacant posts, organized under Section 11(f) of the Maldives Legal Profession Act.
A total of 991 lawyers registered to vote in the elections, out of whom 396 cast their ballots.
Siraj was elected by a majority of the votes, with Ahmed Shifau being elected as a member of the Executive Committee.
Siraj garnered 224 votes in his favor, with Mohamed Faisal, his opponent securing 172 votes.
Siraj, also the Vice Chairman of the Maldives International Arbitration, also filled the position of a member at the Elections Commission of Maldives (EC) and was the Vice President of the commission as well.
