A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed to develop Villingili International Airport.

The MoU was signed on Wednesday, as part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s tour of some islands in the south of Maldives which he began on Sunday morning.

The signing took place during a meeting the president held with the residents of Villingili island.

The project was contracted to Belgian company, NV Besix SA.

The contract to develop Villingili International Airport was signed by Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muththalib on behalf of the Maldivian government, and Business Development Manager of NV Besix SA Servè Dolmans on behalf of the company.

Under the scope of the project, tourism development will be initiated alongside the development of the airport.

The contract entails the development of an integrated tourism zone.

President Muizzu, speaking to residents of the island, noted that the land reclamation project would proceed throughout the airport development project.
