The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva has paid a courtesy call on President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

She called on the Maldivian leader on Monday, on the sidelines of the World Governments Summit 2024.

The meeting was held as part of the Maldivian president’s ongoing official trip to Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), upon the official invitation of Vice-President, Prime Minister and Minister for Defence of UAE, Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The meeting saw the IMF MD stressing on the grave necessity to implement inclusive fiscal structural reforms and consolidation strategies to fortify a versatile economy against external shocks and internal challenges for the Maldives.

Shedding light on the dire fiscal situation the new administration faces since assuming office, the IMF MD stressed the extent of the task at hand.

She went on to underscore the urgency of implementing practical fiscal measures.

Touching upon the incumbent administration’s proactive stance, decisiveness, and forward-thinking approach, the IMF MD applauded the ambitious public-sector reforms Muizzu outlined during his inaugural address and recognized the potential they carry to pave the path for sustainable economic growth and stability.

Georgieva went on to express confidence in the incumbent administration’s economic reform agenda.

She also praised the decisive steps the incumbent administration has taken and highlighted their importance in laying the groundwork for a strong and prosperous future for the island nation.

The IMF MD commended the Maldivian leader’s proactive engagement with the public.

She also touched upon the incumbent administration’s efforts to foster understanding and communicate the government's initiatives with the people transparently.

Georgieva acknowledged the unique position of the Maldives as a nation blessed with natural beauty.

She however noted that it has a fragile environment and shed light on the urgent need for new investments, which would bolster resilience.

The meeting also saw discussions revolving around further areas of cooperation, including climate change, adaptation and resilience.

Expressing sincere gratitude to the support provided by IMF, the president shed light on the close relations the Maldives enjoys with IMF.

The Maldivian leader and the IMF MD expressed mutual hope for future engagements before wrapping up the meeting.

Also the former CEO of the World Bank, Georgieva served as the Vice President for Budget and Human Resources of the European Commission as well.

The Maldivian leader departed to Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from Velana International Airport (VIA) on Sunday evening. The World Governments Summit 2024 will proceed from February 12 – 14.

Themed ‘Shaping Future Governments', the World Governments Summit will welcome governments, international organizations, thought leaders, and private sector leaders this year, where discussions will take place on future challenges and empowering the next generation of governments.

The president is scheduled to deliver an address at the summit.

Muizzu will also be engaging in discussions with dignitaries attending the summit.

In addition to this, Muizzu will attend and deliver the keynote address at the Maldives Investment Forum.

The Maldives Investment Forum will take place on February 13.
