Fisheries Minister Dr. Mohamed Shainee has leveled blamed of recent stabbings in Male’ City on former President, and one-time mentor, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

Within the space of one week, the capital city has been stunned with five stabbings and two murders.

The ‘gutsy’ Dr. Shainee, who recently gathered the ‘youth’ for a support rally, leveled the blame on President Maumoon. In his early morning tweet, Dr. Shainee said that it was unacceptable to resort to creating chaos, risking the lives of youth and arson for the sole purpose of gaining power.

Dr. Shainee had tagged President Maumoon in the tweet, penned in Dhivehi.

In his tweet, he had referred to arson attacks. On Monday, a fire was reported in Parliament bathrooms, which had forced a halt to Parliament sessions. Last year January a similar incident was reported, near the time incumbent President Abdullah Yameen was to give his Presidential Address. The Address was shifted to Dharubaaruge premises.

In spite of the rise in violence, the Government Dr. Shainee is part of, has remained silent. No arrests had been made in connection to the last two murders.

Home Ministry and Police have been at the receiving end of public criticism. Many had stated that Police and the Ministry are now solely for arresting opposition politicians rather than preventing major crimes.

Last July, Dr. Shainee had gathered members of youth groups in Male’ in Carnival area. In this gathering, the Minister boasted that there was ‘no pressure’ on the Government and that the Government was ‘gutsy’. He also said the Government had plenty of guts to provide for youth.

‘What some fail to grasp is that we are not gutsy, because we’re silent and calm. We have guts. We have enough will to work with youth to provide for youth,’ he said.
