The government is to establish a national registry of taxi drivers.

This was announced by the President’s Office on Tuesday.

The decision was reached by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu following a cabinet meeting held on Sunday.

The decision was based on deliberations held on a paper submitted by the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation at the cabinet meeting.

The decision comes as part of a series of measures being implemented in a bid to modernize and standardize taxi services. Some of the other measures include introducing a digital payment system, negotiating with banks to reduce transaction fees, and implementing a reporting mechanism for cash payments.

Sunday’s cabinet meeting also saw discussions around the long-term vision of developing the quality and efficiency of taxi services to meet international scales.

The decision also entailed formulating guidelines on the rights and responsibilities of relevant stakeholders.

To achieve this, the president has decided to make all necessary efforts in consultation with relevant bodies and stakeholders.

In addition to this, Muizzu has also taken important decisions to prepare the national registry of taxi drivers in a strict manner with necessary details and information about the providers of taxi services in the Maldives.
