The Criminal Court has remanded a man under allegations of drug trafficking.
The court order was issued upon a request by the Maldives Police Service (MPS).
MPS sought to remand Ali Yaaniu, 27 in custody for a period of 20 days.
His remand was sought as Yaaniu is deemed a risk to the safety and security of the society, in view of Article 49 of the Maldives’ Constitution, as well as Sections 59 and 60 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
The court order highlights that there is enough evidence to pin the accusations against him.
Further, the court has also noted that it was believed that there was sufficient evidence against the accused, based on the testimonies of witnesses, signed DHL documents, drug test reports and mobile records received in connection with the case.
The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) has revealed that the case will be filed at court within a period of 15 days.
