President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has revealed that his administration is actively seeking a solution for reducing tariffs levied on fish exports to the Republic of Türkiye.
The president said this while speaking to press, after returning home following the conclusion of his first official trips abroad since assuming officer on November 17, to Turkey and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
President Muizzu wrapped up his trip to UAE and returned on Sunday afternoon.
Speaking to press at Velana International Airport (VIA), President Muizzu described momentous highlights of his visit to Turkey including a key agreement signed between the two countries to increase trade and commerce in the Maldives.
In addition to this, President Muizzu highlighted that the level of trade activity between the two countries would likely double within a year.
Shedding light on discussions held with government officials of Turkey, President Muizzu stated that officials were actively working to grant an exception for the Maldives to reduce the high tariff rate currently levied on fish products exported from the country.
President Muizzu also shed light on the significance of the economic agreement signed during the visit and noted that the solidifying of trade relations is already proceeding, as per the agreement.
The Maldivian leader also expressed optimism to attract an increase influx of Turkish investments into the Maldives, particularly in sectors such as tourism, with the assurance received from Turkish authorities regarding the facilitation of investments.
