Discussions have been held on challenges faced by the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (MBC) and the Maldives Media Council (MMC) in fulfilling their duties.
The discussions were held at the President's Office on Monday, during a meeting the office’s minister for Strategic Communications Ibrahim Khaleel held with officials from the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (MBC) and the Maldives Media Council (MMC).
Discussions at the meeting revolved around challenges surfaced for MBC and MMC in fulfilling their duties as well as their concerns regarding the media environment.
Officials that joined the meeting recognized the legal reform process had been at a standstill since 2008.
As such, they shed light on the need for government support in providing opportunities for human resource development in the media sector and the amendment of the Broadcasting Act.
Further, members of MBC and MMC applauded the initiatives emphasized in President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s presidential pledges, particularly the allocation of a suitable portion of the government's budget to the media, fostering media growth, and establishing a media village.
Within just 10 days of President Muizzu assuming office, the President’s Office has been engaging with all stakeholders in the Maldives media.
