An expatriate has been arrested and remanded under accusations of drug abuse.
Ariful Islam, 19, was presented to the Criminal Court for his remand hearing on Saturday.
The Bangladeshi national was remanded for a period of 15 days, to expire on November 18.
The 19-year-old is accused of abusing and possession of narcotics.
The Criminal Court remanded him after sufficient evidence was provided to implicate him, by the Maldives Police Service (MPS).
The circumstances under which the remand was ordered were issued in view of Article 49 of the Constitution of Maldives and Section 59 and 60 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, for the safety and security of the society.
Further, the reason for considering the condition of remand to be present, was that it is deemed to be satisfied with the requirements stated under Section 13(c) of the Code of Criminal Procedure relating to the trial.
The police institution has also revealed that the 19-year-old Bangladeshi had been residing illegally in the Maldives.
