The first couple has observed a military parade and display by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) in commemoration of the 58th anniversary of Maldives’ independence.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and First Lady Fazna Ahmed attended the festivities on Thursday evening.
The first couple was greeted by Minister of Defence and National Security Mariya Ahmed Didi, Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla and the Chief of Defence Forces Lieutenant General Abdulla Shamaal upon arrival at the Republic Square, where the festivities took place.
The military parade and display was kicked off with a presidential salute followed by a performance of the National Anthem by the MNDF military band.
Vice President Faisal Naseem and senior officials from government offices and institutions joined the general public in observing the festivities.
Maldives celebrates independence on July 26 every year since gaining independence from the British on the 26 July 1965 after 77 years as a British protectorate.
