Maldives Customs Service has seized drugs that were being smuggled into the country via courier.

The authority revealed that the drugs were seized from a parcel shipped from the United Kingdom on April 15.

The parcel was checked thoroughly after officers found suspicious materials inside it.

Officers confiscated four packets stuffed with suspicious substances. In the first phase of investigations, customs officials found that the suspected narcotics had tested positive to Mephedrone.

The parcel weighed a total of 1,040 grams.

The drugs weighing 1,040 grams, carry an anticipated street value of MVR 1.8 million.

Customs have since handed the drugs over to the Maldives Police Service (MPS) for further probes.

This comes at a time the police institution has been conducting several operations to curb drug trafficking and smuggling in the Maldives.
