An individual has been arrested in Thinadhoo island of Gaaf Dhaal atoll, for being in possession of a hefty amount of alcohol.
The Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that the drug operation was conducted in Thinadhoo as part of their efforts to curb drug trafficking and smuggling across the island nation, and to crackdown on such networks.
The operation, carried out on April 21, stemmed from an intel report connection with alcohol trafficking on the island.
Arrested during the operation was a 33-year-old Maldivian man.
The operation was carried out by officers of the Police Intelligence Unit as well as those stationed on the island.
Officers confiscated 138 cans of beer and 103 bottles of alcohol during a raid at his residence.
Upon being presented to the Thinadhoo Magistrate Court for his remand hearing, the suspect has been remanded for four days at a facility to be allocated by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The case is currently under further investigation.
