Key agreements have been signed between the governments of Maldives and China.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid and the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Maldives Wang Lixin witnessed the signing of key agreements held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday afternoon.

The agreements in question are on significant areas such as infrastructure development and health and were signed as part of Vice Chairman of the Chinese International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) Deng Boqing’s ongoing official visit to the Maldives.

Four key agreements were signed during the ceremony:

  • A Memorandum of Understanding on the Development Cooperation Plan (2023-2025)
  • Letters of Exchange on the Feasibility Study on Hospitals in Maldives
  • Letters of Exchange on Renovation of the Maldives National Museum
  • Letters of Exchange on the Maintenance of the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge

The MoU on the Development Cooperation Plan (2023-2025), signed between China International Development Cooperation Agency and the Maldivian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will focus on promoting cooperation in areas including health care, climate change, infrastructure, agriculture, people-to-people exchanges and disaster prevention and reduction, promote economic and social development as well as improving livelihoods in Maldivian communities.

The MoU was signed by Foreign Secretary Ahmed Latheef on behalf of the Maldivian government.

The Letters of Exchange on the Feasibility Study on Hospitals in Maldives was signed by Minister of State for Health Ahmed Adil.

Further, Minister of State for Arts, Culture and Heritage Mohamed Thoriq signed the Letters of Exchange on Renovation of the Maldives National Museum.

The fourth agreement, Letters of Exchange on the Maintenance of the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, was signed by Minister of State for National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Akram Kamaluddin.

The ceremony also saw FM Shahid speaking about the close ties Maldives currently enjoys with China.

He went on to express gratitude to the government of China for their generous contributions towards the socio-economic development of the Maldives.

The Maldivian foreign minister highlighted that the construction of critical infrastructure buildings such as hospitals is expected to have a significant impact to the daily lives of the people of Maldives.
